Twitter quitters are for the birds

It amazes me that when I’m in a large group, I almost always hear the same three comments about Twitter:

· Twitter is for kids, mostly following celebrities.

· Who cares what some people are eating for dinner?

· I tried it for a few days, and thought it was like talking to myself.

So many people try Twitter and never go back. That’s like trying to be a doctor and dropping out after BP 101.

When I was growing up my Mom and Dad would never allow quitting. When I signed up (and paid up) for baton twirling lessons, I had to stick with them even after my twirling with fire almost burned out the gym, sort of like Carrie.

Twitter Quitters had short attention spans. All Social Media practitioners are always testing new platforms, engaging with new people and using it everyday.

In fact, I’m just trying Gowalla today, Foursquare, too.

I don’t want to have Twitter as my one area of expertise. Using all the Social Media and connecting them will multi-purpose my content and increase my luck!

  1. Hi Lois, what a great blog! I will need to be more open to all social media.

  2. I’m very familiar with these 3 comments because I said the exact same thing in the beginning. Quite honestly I didn’t like Twitter a lot.
Now, a few months later, I’m so glad I didn’t give up on the platform. It’s amazing how it enables one to build relationships with people you would probably never meet otherwise. It also enables me to learn a great deal every day.
Great post. I liked it :)

  3. My whole family doesn’t get Twitter but I don’t mind! I tweeted crazy and found others just like me! Now I don’t explain Twitter…you either get it or you don’t and if you don’t you are missing out!! I promote my blog through twitter with great success! I love Twitter thanks to all my friends! ;)

  4. Twitter is a tool, not a goal. You have to have a reason to tweet when you come to Twitter, or you will leave. It’s not a matter of quitting.

I know the first time I came to Twitter I left. Then, I decided to use Twitter to promote my blog, so I came back. My use of Twitter has shifted. I tweet too much, so I blog less. Ouch! But, Twitter becomes about the people you find who share your interests and don’t run away from your opinions, because of the value you add. I meet many of my followers in person, so no, you are not talking to yourself.

  5. Well thanks for commenting here on “Joy”. Sorry about the “cross-legged” challenge…and I was going to invite you to my yoga class!

You are on my power list too.

  6. It’s always hard for me to find a minute to really dig into a social media vehicle like Twitter (unless I do it while I’m driving and THAT’s not an option!) … but I just culled my small-but-important group of follows down to a “power list” and I have renewed energy for harnessing the power of tweeting. Lois, you are absolutely in my “power list!” PS and thanks for inquiring – my knee is great for everything except sitting cross-legged on the floor, which I’m thrilled about!

  7. Fascinating. Just yesterday I discovered five new social media sites (three different types) I will eventually all be a part of. I’m particularly interested in your impressions of Foursquare. Please let me know.

  8. Thanks Les for your comment. Today is my birthday…and I’m feeling just “Old” school, alright! So you just made my day…happy.

  9. I agree Lois–that just happened to me too. I just chalk it up to the fact that there are some people who (1) don’t want to connect (2) have nothing to share, and (3) have no value to add anyway. You’re very cool because you’re one of the old school direct marketers who’s using social media effectively. Cheers! Les
